Speedboat transfers
Resorts in the atolls near the airport are usually reached by speedboat. Journeys tend to be short, and boats generally leave from a jetty near the terminal.
Ask whether boats run after dark, because a late flight can decide how your first night goes.
Seaplane transfers
Farther resorts are often served by seaplane. Flights usually run in daylight, which can mean waiting for a connection or an overnight stay if you land late.
Baggage allowances on small aircraft can be tighter than on your international flight, so check them.
Domestic flight and boat
The farthest atolls may need a domestic flight followed by a short boat ride. It adds time, but can put you on a very quiet island.
What to ask every resort
How long is the transfer, and what does it cost per adult and per child, return?
Is it included in the rate? What happens if your flight is delayed?
Always confirm current schedules and prices with the resort.
